We must ensure that everyone living in Australia is supported during the COVID-19 pandemic. But right now, some of the most vulnerable people living in our community have been left behind.

People seeking asylum and refugees have been forced to flee their homes, leaving everything behind. They’ve survived torturous journeys to get here and then been repeatedly punished as a result of our government’s asylum policies.  They face interminable waits on their claims, the limbo of being denied permanent protection, and the agony of family separation.  Despite all of this, many have still managed to find work to support themselves and their families.  But now, with the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic fallout, they are facing destitution and homelessness, with zero support from the Australian government.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has repeatedly reminded us that we’re all in this together, but in excluding huge numbers of people from the COVID-19 response, his government’s actions have shown otherwise.

Donate today to help us coordinate national coalition of civil society to ensure that #NobodyLeftBehind during COVID-19. Medicare, income support and visa security for everyone. We are in this together.

Hiba* is seeking asylum. She told us that she has lost her job and her livelihood. She is petrified for herself and her daughter, and without basic financial support, visa security or medical care, now faces an extremely uncertain future.

“I haven’t worked or been paid for months and I can’t afford to pay my rent or even basic food supplies. I don’t know how I will support myself and my young daughter.”

Can you stand in solidarity with Hiba?

We cannot achieve change for people like Hiba without your support. During this state of uncertainty in the world, we need to stand together more than ever.

One of our supporters believes in the same things as you - that in the current crisis we must ensure that all people in Australia, especially the most vulnerable, have access to medical care and a basic safety net so they’re not forced into destitution. This supporter has very generously chosen to match any donation made up to a total of $100,000. This is incredible news. It also means that by donating to this appeal, your donation will be doubled, and your impact magnified. Your support will enable us to advocate for people like Hiba and ensure Prime Minister Scott Morrison hears her voice.

We can’t let refugees and people seeking asylum, like Hiba, fall through the gaps and be left with no support whatsoever during this crisis. That's why the Refugee Council of Australia is leading a collective campaign to ensure #NobodyLeftBehind during Covid-19.

Refugees and people seeking asylum already struggle with high levels of financial stress. As the Australian economy has dramatically slowed down and many jobs have been lost, this vulnerable community is suffering even greater strain. That's why we are working non-stop to raise this issue with the Federal government. From meetings and media, to policy briefings, and evidence from aborad, and most importantly bringing the voices of people like Hiba to our political leaders.
