Make this your next act of kindness

Make this your next act of kindness

Australia is at a crossroads.

Right now, a record number of people are displaced. This coincides with the suspension of the United States’ refugee resettlement program, formerly the world’s largest, under the Trump administration. A number of EU countries have similarly paused or reduced their resettlement programs.

Right when the need is at its greatest, refugees are being turned away.

This is a historic opportunity for Australia to extend the hand of kindness.

We need to set a new standard of care and safety for refugees in Australia and your kindness could save lives. Your tax-time donation will help the Refugee Council of Australia continue our work to advocate for fairer and more compassionate refugee policies and programs that will impact refugees here and overseas.

When one door closes...

Sidiqa and her family were meant to resettle in the United States in late 2016. They’d fled Afghanistan and had been living in limbo in Indonesia for four years, eagerly awaiting this chance.

But the first Trump administration imposed a travel ban and suspended its refugee resettlement program, leaving tens of thousands of refugees – including Sidiqa and her family – without a path to safety.

It would be a whole decade before one country finally extended the hand of kindness to them and gave them a place to call home – Australia.

As the US and Europe close their hearts and their doors, we have a duty of care to people like Sidiqa – people who urgently need an act of kindness.

This tax time, you can help elevate the Refugee Council of Australia’s impact in the global story during this critical moment in our history.

What kindness looks like in refugee policy

We aim to work with Australia’s new Parliament to implement these key steps for a kinder Australia:

  • Increasing the number of refugee resettlement places in Australia and unlocking complementary pathways
  • Quickly resolving longstanding cases of refugees already in Australia, and enabling access to work, education, healthcare and essential support while their claims are assessed
  • Creating and implementing fair, robust and considered protection systems centred on the needs of people forced from their homes
  • Urgently reuniting families torn apart, so they can rebuild their lives together in safety

With your critical support, we can keep putting pressure on the Parliament of Australia’s to realise our vision for a fairer, more welcoming Australia.
