Create for Ukraine project unites your inner creativity with your ability to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life far across the globe. Join us for this glimpse into Ukrainian identity and folk culture through its beautiful tradition of embroidery.
Guided by the Ksenia from KX Embroidery, you will have the opportunity to create your own embroidered motif from scratch, using a beautiful design from sorochky, embroidered shirts, of the early 20th century from the region of Chernihivshchyna in northeastern Ukraine.
About the artist: Ksenia is a grandma-taught and self-taught tragic for Ukrainian embroidery. For Ksenia, embroidery is a connection to heritage and a focus on crafting truly gorgeous pieces that live up the long and rich tradition of Ukrainian embroidery. You can read about and see more of Ksenia’s embroidery at KXembroidery.
About the design: Shtapivka, backstitch, is extremely commonly seen in embroidery, adding detail or outlining a design. Here it takes centre stage. This delicate design consists of rhomboids, symbols of fertility and at their centres, the heraldic knot – the family. At each knot is a stylised eight-point star, which gives life to all, embroidered in kosa hlad’, a diagonal, counted satin stitch.
About the charity: Who brings more life to families than children? Save Ukraine is the initiative of Mykola Kuleba, Ukraine’s 2014-2021 Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights. He and his team are addressing the needs of Ukrainian children across three projects. Please take the time to visit their website.
