Australia's 48th Parliament has the power to change lives.

For decades, Australia’s resettlement program has been supported by successive governments, enabling millions of modern Australians to contribute because they, their parents or their grandparents were able to shape new lives free from war and persecution. 

Yet in the last 25 years, we have witnessed thousands of refugees and people seeking asylum end up in limbo, denied basic rights and unable to plan for their future. Many of these individuals, including children who have only ever called Australia home, have no permanent status and no clear path forward. Many refugees also face insurmountable barriers to reuniting with their loved ones. 

Today, global humanitarian crises are forcibly displacing an unprecedented number of people. Constructive and compassionate responses are needed more than ever. It is in this context that we, the Refugee Council of Australia, present our vision for the refugee response of Australia’s 48th Parliament.

We know you feel strongly about the rights of people in need of protection, and invite you to endorse our vision which focuses on three core themes: 

  1. Expanding Australia’s Refugee and Humanitarian Program, including additional pathways for refugees through community, business and educational sponsorship  
  2. Swiftly, practically and justly resolving the most protracted cases of people who have sought protection in Australia, as well as repairing our broken asylum system
  3. Encouraging progress in the Asia-Pacific towards increasing refugees’ access to improved conditions, longer term protection and durable solutions 

By lending your voice and your name to this vision, which we will present to the 48th Parliament of Australia, you’ll send Federal politicians a clear message that you believe in an Australia that is fair, compassionate and welcoming to all, and compel them to act in the interests of those who need protection. 

The 48th Parliament of Australia has the opportunity to build on an 80-year legacy of welcome. By continuing to lead in refugee resettlement, Australia can make global contributions in providing safe alternatives to forcibly displaced people in our region and beyond.
