We are honored to share this important invitation to celebrate the directorial debut of Wimana Beatrice in a special World Refugee Day film event.
Life in My Shoe is Beatrice's first film, a documentary about her family's displacement from the Congo, and her tenacious pursuit of education in Uganda's Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. Beatrice personalizes the trauma of fleeing the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a child, the struggle to stay in school once settling in a refugee camp, and her determination to become a role model for other women in her shoe(s).
As we know, this moment in history calls upon us all to look within ourselves and deepen our lifelong work of anti-racism. We are encouraged and inspired to join those in the social impact filmmaking community who are actively addressing the entrenched layers of white supremacy and neocolonialism in our work. Much of the global refugee narrative is shaped by outsiders rather than refugees themselves, perpetuating systemic power dynamics that rob refugees of their agency and dignity. Life in My Shoe is an unvarnished, authentic story told directly from the perspective of an African woman supported by an all-African production crew. This is one of the many reasons why we're so proud to share it with you.
Please join us on June 20th for a special live screening of the film followed by a Q&A session with Beatrice and Dennis O'Nen, the Director of Cinelab Akademie in Uganda, which helped to make the film. If you're unable to participate in real-time on June 20th, please stay tuned to our Facebook page for a recording of the live event available from June 20 - 30th. The film will be available on-demand through Vimeo beginning July 1st. Any proceeds made from donations or on-demand purchases will be paid to Beatrice and Cinelab Akademie.
