Some events mark a date on a calendar. This one marks something bigger.

In 2026, Australia celebrates one million refugees welcomed since World War II - one million people who arrived seeking safety, and found it. The Spirit of Welcome Community Festival is our annual celebration of that legacy, and this year it has never felt more meaningful.

Join SSI, Inner West Council, and the Community Refugee Welcome Centre for an afternoon of cross-cultural performances, global food, art, and genuine community connection — where newly arrived Australians and Inner West locals come together to celebrate everything that welcome makes possible.

This year's festival carries the theme Welcomed to Welcomer — recognising the powerful cycle at the heart of Australia's refugee story: those who were once welcomed are now creating welcome for others. You'll see that story in the faces of our performers, our artists, our volunteers, and the people who make this event what it is every year.

On the day you can expect:

  • A showcase of work by refugee artists through SSI's Creative Compass program — displayed in the gallery space throughout the afternoon

  • Live music and dance performances from across cultures

  • Creative workshops and activities for kids and families

  • Global food stalls

  • A celebration of SSI's 10-year partnership with Allianz through the Refugee Education Scholarship Program

The Spirit of Welcome has become one of Sydney's most beloved Refugee Week events — drawing community members, local leaders, and special guests who come not for formality, but for connection. This year is shaping up to be our most significant yet.

Come as you are. Bring your family. Be part of it.

Will you come?
