Stand up for fairness with us

What happens when a fair go is taken away?

Across the world, governments are stepping back from their humanitarian commitments. This is happening right when the need is at its greatest: 120 million people around the world are currently displaced. And there is a real risk Australia could follow suit.

Australia’s commitment to refugees is under threat. And when fairness is challenged, we must stand up for it.

Our legacy for resettling refugees dates back decades. Since the end of World War II, Australia has welcomed a million refugees through our Refugee and Humanitarian Program, a million people who have rebuilt their lives here after fleeing war, persecution or violence. Because Australia gave them a fair go, they went on to help build the Australia we know today.

But the future of the very program that provided them safety is now being debated by the Australian Government. There is a real and significant threat to how this country responds to people in need of protection.

Australia’s fair go has changed more than a million lives.

Together, we must do everything we can to protect it.

Mark's journey to a fair go

Mark remembers his family being expelled from Uganda with a few suitcases and $10.

Born in India, Mark moved to Uganda with his family as a child. As citizens, their lives were stable, peaceful and full of opportunity.

Idi Amin’s regime, however, brought terror into everyday life. Mark remembers, “I saw a mob pick on one guy and stone him to death. People were starting to disappear.”

Then Idi Amin made a shock announcement: all Indians in Uganda had to leave within three months. Mark’s family was forced to relinquish all their wealth and assets and leave, or risk imprisonment.

They arrived in Sydney in 1973, just as Australia was starting to distance itself from the White Australia policy. It was this historic change that gave Mark and his family the fair go they needed to rebuild their lives, among a community who welcomed them.

Mark’s story is one of a million examples of how Australia’s fair go has been transformative for people in need of protection.

This tax-time, you can help elevate the Refugee Council of Australia’s impact in protecting what Australia is known for – a fair go, for everyone.

What fairness looks like in refugee policy

A big part of the Refugee Council of Australia's work is ensuring people seeking safety are treated fairly and with dignity.

At this critical moment in human history, when we’re witnessing countries stepping back from their humanitarian commitments, our work is vital to ensure that Australia does not follow this trend.

We strongly believe fairness should never depend on where someone was born, or where they were forced to flee. So, in your name, we are:

  • advocating for constructive policies and a principled refugee and humanitarian program
  • challenging proposals that weaken Australia’s commitment to protecting refugees
  • ensuring refugee voices are heard when decisions about their futures are being made

With your critical support, we can keep putting pressure on Australia’s government and parliament to hold fast to a fair go – for everyone.
