Support our storytellers

For too long, the voices of refugees and people seeking asylum have been absent from our conversations. The exclusion of their stories continues to disempower and marginalise refugees, representing them as passive recipients of aid.

When refugees speak, their stories and issues affecting them are less likely to be misrepresented. When they raise their voices, they are empowered as leaders whose words can create important change within our community.

You can help to amplify refugee voices and change the national dialogue around refugees and people seeking asylum by supporting our Face-to-Face program. Your donations will help fund essential speaker training, project and meeting expenses, travel costs, staff and volunteer support, without which the program wouldn’t be possible.

The chance to turn this tide is now

With a new federal government, we have an opportunity to make Australia a fairer, more welcoming country for refugees and people seeking asylum. But the government will change only as much as it thinks it has public support.

With your help, we can make that a lasting change, one story at a time.

In the Face-To-Face: Schools & Community Program refugees go into classrooms, offices, media outlets and government offices, and tell their stories. Sessions can range from presentations to longer workshops that include small group activities. Each session is tailed for the audience and includes comprehensive follow-up resources and activities.

Through the kind support of people like you, we can continue to expand this incredible program, and share the voices of refugees with more Australians than ever before.

Please help support refugee voices be heard

One story can change everything

We’ve all been moved by the power of a story. More than statistics or percentages, an individual’s voice can help us understand someone else’s experience in a way we never could otherwise.

“I see that through the Face-to-Face Program, our speakers go out and share their journeys in a fundamental, powerful way. The effect is transformational.

“People with refugee experiences are not just victims. They are powerful initiators of change.” – Abang Anade Othow.

With your support, the Face-to-Face: Schools & Community Program can reach more minds across the country, and change the conversation about refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia.

“In three words: Inspiring, thought-provoking and humbling”

“About two years ago, I attended the Face-to-Face speaker program online. I listened to the story of a young Assyrian woman from Iraq, who told us about her refugee journey from Iraq to Turkey and back again, and then to Australia.

Hearing her story reminded me that refugees are everyday people who face terrible, often dangerous circumstances beyond their control. They’re forced to flee everything they love and know, including family, friends and their home.

I would recommend this program to other organisations. It’s an opportunity to liaise with a person from a refugee background, get to know them and ask as many questions as you like. For my colleagues, it meant seeing a person from a refugee background as a real person, rather than a story in the media.”
