It’s time: our vision for refugees in Australia

It’s time: our vision for refugees in Australia

For many people, an election year means one thing – anxiety about what’s to come.

With each new parliament, the lives of Australians change. This year, we want that change to be a positive one for forcibly displaced people seeking safety on our shores.

The Refugee Council of Australia has a bold vision for the future – one in which people who come to us for protection are welcomed, supported and celebrated.

This is the time to be heard. Your donation today will help us deliver our vision to the 48th Parliament of Australia and compel it to act in the interests of refugees and people seeking asylum.

Be part of creating a fairer, more humane, more welcoming Australia.

Act now for refugees like Atena

Atena fled Iran with her family over a decade ago.

After months in detention, they were released into the Australian community but with little support. As a young teenager, Atena spent countless hours translating important documents for her parents and talking to immigration lawyers.

Atena earned a scholarship to attend university in Australia. However, she was forced to turn down the offer, as her and her family’s bridging visas prevented Atena from accessing higher education.

They spent years meeting with politicians to resolve the issue. Atena even offered to pay her university fees in full but was warned that doing so could lead to deportation due to strict visa conditions.

Atena’s story highlights the urgent need to reform the policies and programs aimed at refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia. Our laws define the way we live and reflect who we are. By lobbying for change, we can positively reform the experiences of refugees and people seeking asylum.

The 48th Parliament has the power to change lives

Our vision for parliament provides a framework for action which would have a significant impact on the lives of refugees and people seeking asylum – people like Atena and her family.

Our vision focuses on:

  • Building on what Australia has been doing well in refugee resettlement and further developing complementary migration pathways for refugees
  • Practically and justly resolving the most protracted cases of people who have sought protection in Australia and repairing the overall asylum system
  • Encouraging progress in the Asia-Pacific region towards increasing refugees’ access to longer term protection and durable solutions

With your support, we can pressure Australia’s next parliament to unite around these recommendations and act for the good of all of us.
